Accent Training Studio Course
Is starting next Monday January 21st, 2019.
It lasts for 3 weeks, but only requires your physical presence twice a week, on Monday and on Saturday, for about an hour, on the computer.
There's lots of support material, even an emergency Google Form if you're really stuck and need help ASASP.
But WHY? Why should you do this course?
Why should you do a course to improve your accent? To a native level, of all things?
What's wrong with sounding foreign? If you're not native, why shouldn't you wear your own native accent proudly?
And the answer is, you should. You most definitely should.
As long as that does not impair the efficiency with which you run your life.
Can you go to the supermarket as easily? To the Pharmacy? Can you schedule a doctor's appointment without a problem? Can you reserve tickets for whatever show you interested in? Can you ask information about trains or buses and understand what you're told at least well enough not to end up on the wrong side of the country?
In fact, the question is this:
Can You Communicate?
And no book, no amazing self-study method just out of the oven (sorry, that's a Portuguese expression, it means brand new) will help you here.
I know I keep repeating this, but one needs to raise the awareness of this fact: you Can't Read About Sound anymore than you can Write About Sound.
You have to Hear it, many times, and repeat it, until you are producing something that Makes Sense to the Natives. And when you Hear it, it has to be so comfortable and common to you that you're no longer Hearing Noise, you're Hearing Meaning.
Having Feedback is essential and cuts the time that this takes in half, if not more.
A coach cuts this time down even significantly more, because there are "shortcuts" to achieving this, and with a helping hand, proper feedback and a little effort on your part, NATIVE FLUENCY and ACCENT are closer than you think.
How does this work again? Hearing and Repeating? Nothing else?
Can my memory handle it?
This doesn't work by you hearing and repeating. If it did, I would be teaching parrots.
Your memory doesn't need to be strong.
And yes, this will work for you.
This works for everybody, because it's not the result of a few days of scratching head thinking "how-can-I-make-some-money". It's the result of years of research, both academic and asking students "Would this help?" and "How would it help best?". Years of testing, of offering things for free asking only in return a sincere opinion.
So yes, it will work.
Have you ever heard of *Phonetic Writing*?
I do it all the time with my clients.
Let me give you an example. With an English word.
The word "How". Not an easy one, but possible.
If someone systematically mispronounced this word and you wanted to make it *visible* for them how to do it right, a possible way would be to think of the sounds of "how" and then try to write them another way, a way that our friend wouldn't get wrong.
So, something like HA-oo where the A is like the A in FATHER.
Another word: "news".
But let's try: nee-ooz...
Not exactly there, but then how many times have I told you you can't write about sound anymore than you can read about sound... You need sound to understand sound. Does a person who was born blind ever really grasp the notion of colour? Does a person who was born deaf really ever grasp in all its fullness what Beethoven's 9th Symphony is? And yes I read Helen Keller's diaries as well, she's one of my heroes, but still...
And you need a coach, feedback. Because you need someone to tell you when you're doing it wrong, why that is happening and make it easier for you to make it right.
If you get both and are willing to put on a little effort... wonders can happen.
And it's not a Course where you hear and repeat.
It's a course where you separate the sounds of a word in its constituting parts, notice you know some of them very well because they exist in your language, and get familiarised with the ones that sound stranger to you by breaking them in bits that you have no problems with.
